The Top Three Bookshops in York
If you’re reading this then I assume you’re a bookworm, or perhaps you’re planning a trip to York, or maybe you’re just nosey - either way, welcome!
I’d like to preface this by saying that this used to be a list…but unfortunately, a few of the best bookshops in York closed, which whittled this list down to a ‘top three’ instead.
Anyway, let’s get on with it…
If you’re even remotely familiar with York, this will not come as a surprise to you! Kicking us off at number one is of course, The Minster Gate Bookshop.
Perhaps the most popular bookshop in York, it sits in the shadow of the Minster, beside Hebden Tea (do go and taste some of their samples!). There are over five floors, and every corner bursting with spines.
The first room is brimming with vintage editions. Down a narrow staircase, in the basement, you’ll find books at bargain prices. Each floor has a theme, and even the stairs hold stacks of books.
If you’re only in York for a few hours, this is your go-to bookshop.
Address: 8 Minster Gates, York YO1 7HL
Just around the corner from the Minster lies The Little Apple Bookshop - this one is adorable! Decked out with bright colours, this shop makes it clear that it specialises in children’s books. Not only does it sell books, but there is also an array of bookish knick-knacks if you’re in need of a birthday gift for a bookworm friend, or wanting to treat yourself.
Address: 13 High Petergate, York, YO1 7EN
Aptly named, The Blue House Bookshop is, indeed, blue. Being a more recent addition to the book scene in York, the inside space is minimal and clean, giving the feel of an art gallery.
Specialising in children’s and young adult fiction, Blue House carefully stacks its shelves with a carefully selected bunch.
This shop lies just outside of the city walls, but if you’re by Little Apple and Grimoire, it is just one street away!
Address: 10 Bootham, York YO30 7BL
